Sometimes it feels like a blow torch is the only way to remove hard water residue from glass. Before we resort to such drastic measures, let’s look at a couple other options.
If you live in an area with hard water, cleaning residue on glass is a familiar chore. Hard water has a higher mineral content. Therefore, when the water evaporates, we are left with those minerals. They can be really difficult to remove! The internet is full of life hacks for fighting this problem. People suggest everything from rubbing an orange on the glass to using diet coke or essential oils.
I tried several suggestions on my shower door:
1. Vinegar – I love vinegar as a cleaning tool. However, this method is not the most effective on a shower door. Vinegar needs time to break down the residue. A quick spray and wipe was not helpful. I prefer to use vinegar on fixtures, toilets, items that are not upright. Mix equal parts vinegar and water. Soak a rag or paper towel and lay it on the affected area. Leave it there for a bit. Let the vinegar work its magic! Come back and wipe away.
2. Bar Keepers Friend – This cleaning product has been helpful for a lot of tough cleaning projects. It comes as a powder; I prefer the cream. With a little elbow grease, Bar Keepers Friend performed very well against hard water residue. I will comment that it leaves its own residue behind! But a quick rinse and all is well.
3. Cascade Dishwasher Gel – Friends, this was a surprise to me. One Pinterest user suggested oven cleaner, which I felt was too abrasive for glass. However, I considered other kitchen products and thought dishwasher soap would have the same properties being tough on grease, etc. Use a damp rag and add a dab of dishwasher gel. Wipe the glass and add more gel to your rag as needed. This worked well for me! The residue was removed and did not leave a film behind. I did clean glass as normal with glass cleaner just for shine.
In the battle against hard water, maintenance is your friend. Regular use of a squeegee or a quick dry with a towel can really help.
